SKINNERS FALLS, MILANVILLE — The Skinners Falls Bridge, which spans the Delaware River from Skinner’s Falls, NY to Milanville, PA, and supports Route 1002, will be dismantled before the year is out, according to a statement from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
The decision was made following a recent assessment which found that the bridge’s condition calls for its removal for public safety, especially for river traffic.
According to PennDOT, “dismantling” is not the same as “demolition.”
The goal, according to PennDOT in a call with the Upper Delaware Council, is to demolish the bridge before it collapses, classify and store its parts, while further research is being done on potential reconstruction.
According to PennDOT, the bridge, which has been closed to cars since 2019, endangers recreational and boating activity on the Delaware River.
Before winter arrives, PennDOT will make removing the bridge a top priority in collaboration with federal and state agencies, including those in New York.
To provide more details, a virtual public meeting is planned for Thursday, November 14, at 2:00 PM. Participants can attend the meeting at https://bit.ly/SkinnersMeeting using Microsoft Teams.
The PennDOT website has additional information and updates regarding the Skinners Falls Bridge.
