Today is the first official day of spring, even though it seems we’ve been having spring all winter. Who can complain? Certainly, not me! Seeing that it is spring, I thought to do something different with my column by creating a field guide to some of the hideaways I like to visit this time of year.

Hiking Heaven in Willowemoc Wild Forest

If, like me, you find solace in the rustling of leaves and the sound of water trickling over moss covered rocks, then Willowemoc Wild Forest is your personal Eden. Tucked away off Route 17, it’s a hiker’s paradise. There’s a trail for every skill level, from beginners to seasoned trekkers.

One of my favorites is the Frick Pond Loop. It’s a gentle 2.2 mile stroll that winds around a pristine pond surrounded by ancient hemlocks. A perfect way to motivate some movement after a long winter.

Starry Nights at Neversink Reservoir

Just outside of Grahamsville lies the Neversink Reservoir, a tranquil oasis for those who appreciate the wonders of the night sky. Far from the city lights, the reservoir offers the perfect setting for stargazing. On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way and even catch a glimpse of a passing meteor shower.

Bring a blanket, a thermos of hot cocoa, and your favorite telescope. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic date or an adventure with the family. Trust me, those twinkling stars have a way of making your problems seem small and your dreams infinite.

The Enigma of French Woods

French Woods is like a riddle waiting to be solved. Nestled between the Catskills and the Pocono Mountains, it’s an area of curious contrast. One moment, you’ll find yourself wandering through quaint villages with storybook cottages, and the next, you’ll stumble upon vast expanses of wilderness.

Tales of trains at the Roscoe O&W Railway Museum

Take a trip down memory lane to the days when steam locomotives ruled the rails. This little gem preserves the history of the New York, Ontario and Western Railway, which played a significant role in the development of Sullivan County. You’ll even get to see vintage railway equipment.

Afterwards, visit Do Good Spirits, the historic Prohibition Distillery in Roscoe. Take a tour, and you’ll learn about the fascinating history of bootlegging in the region and sample some of the finest craft spirits you’ve ever tasted.

The Artistry of Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum

Located in Livingston Manor, the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is a haven for anglers. It pays homage to the art, history, and craft of fly fishing. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, the museum offers insights into the rich tradition of fly fishing in the Catskills.

If you’re lucky, you might catch a demonstration by a master fly tier. It’s a mesmerizing sight to see those delicate feathers and threads transform into lures that entice the wildest of trout.

The Charm of Tusten

In Tusten, you’ll find the quirky and charming town of Narrowsburg. It’s a picturesque slice of Americana nestled along the Delaware River. Be sure to explore Main Street with its artisanal shops and galleries showcasing the work of local fine artists.

For a relaxing afternoon, grab a coffee and stroll along the riverbank, a good place to catch sight of eagles in flight.

The Charisma of Callicoon

An old-time movie theater, restaurants, craft pizza parlors, antique and vintage clothing stores, a brewery, a distillery, a wine merchant, a gourmet cheese shop, a tattoo parlor, a 133-year-old newspaper and print shop, grocery stores, a library, boutique hotels and a park. Callicoon has it all and more. This could be your last or only stop.

Reminder: There’s always time to seek out the magic that’s waiting just around the corner in one of these hidden gems. So keep exploring, keep cherishing and keep the spirit of Sullivan County alive this spring, and for all seasons to come.
