NEW YORK — The Sullivan County Republican Committee (SCRC) issued a statement yesterday saying it “condemns - in the strongest possible terms - the vile, racist, antisemitic, and misogynistic remarks exposed this week in leaked messages from members of the New York State Young Republicans and their national affiliates.”
The news organization Politico obtained the messages and published a story on Tuesday that included messages from a Telegram chat that were exchanged over seven months by a dozen Young Republican leaders from New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont.
“The behavior described in the Politico investigation represents a complete betrayal of the values of decency, dignity, and respect that our Republican Party was founded upon. These comments are abhorrent, inexcusable, and incompatible with any position of leadership in our organization or our government,” the SCRC said.
Some of the individuals named in the report have held visible positions in state and regional Republican politics - including Bobby Walker, Peter Giunta, and Joe Maligno.
The SCRC said it is not affiliated with any of these individuals.
According to Politico, Walker had been in line to manage Republican Peter Oberacker’s campaign for Congress, but a spokesperson for the campaign said Walker won’t be brought on in light of the comments in the chat.
The SCRC said it has removed from its website and social media post any photographs or materials featuring individuals named in these reports.
“We will continue to take all appropriate steps to ensure that our platforms and communications reflect the values of inclusion, accountability, and integrity,” their statement said.
