Sullivan County’s first Habitat for Humanity

MONTICELLO — The late President Jimmy Carter began his work with Habitat for Humanity in September 1984, a legacy that continues to impact lives, including right here in Sullivan County.

In 2003, Town of Thompson Historian Al Dumas became a candidate for Habitat for Humanity after a member of the local organization recommended him. On March 30, 2004, he moved into his new home, marking his first experience with homeownership.

“It was an American Dream come true,” said Dumas. “Having the status of homeownership, being my own landlord, and taking pride in my home is the biggest benefit.”

To qualify for Habitat for Humanity, candidates must meet specific requirements, hold a steady job, and complete 350 hours of “sweat equity” by contributing to the construction of their home. Despite challenges, Dumas describes the process as overwhelmingly positive due to the organization’s support.

Dumas, who has lived in his Habitat home for over 20 years, encourages others to pursue the opportunity. “Affordable housing is achievable through planning and effort,” he said. “The American Dream is very real.”

Expressing gratitude, he praised the Sullivan County Habitat for Humanity organization and the Carters for their dedication to helping people nationwide.

“I’m proud to be part of the Habitat family,” Dumas said. “[I give] the highest regards to the Sullivan County, New York, organization for helping me and to our late President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter for promoting and paying forward in their humanity to help so many people around the nation and the world.”
