Sullivan sees spate of brush fires

SULLIVAN COUNTY – Recent brush fires have broken out across the county, but thanks to quick firefighter response they have been swiftly contained with no reported injuries.

On Thursday, April 9, at around 3 p.m. the Callicoon Fire Department and Hortonville Fire Department were dispatched to a brush fire on Seminary Road in Callicoon. The fire was knocked down quickly and units returned to service one hour later.

Then on Friday, April 10, at approximately 5 p.m. the Narrowsburg Fire Department was dispatched to a working brushfire on Buddenhagen Road in Narrowsburg. Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after dispatch and immediately called for a resound for all available manpower as the fire was quickly burning up a steep hill.

White Lake Fire Company, Yulan Fire Department and Lake Huntington Fire Company responded, with Beach Lake Fire Co. standing by. The fire was put out in an hour and a half.

According to Fire Coordinator for the county, John Hauschild, there were also brush fires in Yulan on Monday. The causes for all of these remains unknown.

Hauschild said they are seeing an average number of calls for this time of year. He reminds residents of the New York State burn ban, in effect until May 14, saying despite some rain the wind and sun can dry things out quickly.
