To the editor:
As Rockland Central approaches its first budget vote, we are standing at a crossroads.
While financial responsibility is important, it would be a mistake to nickel-and-dime our way into weakening the district. There are many ways to strengthen both our educational offerings and financial position without cutting essential programs or undermining staff morale.
Opportunities exist to expand, like growing Career and Technical Education programs, offering more AP and college level courses, develop in-house special education services that could attract tuition-paying students, and pursue grants like Governor Hochul’s initiative for on-campus childcare centers (can you imagine the quality hires we would attract with in-house daycare)?
These initiatives would open valuable streams of revenue and strengthen our district for the long term.
Unfortunately, some Board members seem more focused on shrinking the budget at any cost, rather than investing strategically in growth. That approach may save a few dollars now, but it risks damaging school culture, driving away talented staff, and limiting opportunities for students for years to come. It’s shortsighted at best, and neglects the many opportunities to have to increase revenue.
There is an abundance of opportunity for educational enrichment and financial wellbeing, and no need for a scarcity mindset. Our children are the true bottom line, not a couple of dollars off our tax bill. This is a time to think boldly, not fearfully. Our community invested in the promise of a stronger, unified district.
