Thompson Board focuses on water, growth

The Town of Thompson Town Board on February 3  approved a resolution declaring itself the lead agency for the environmental review of a proposed upgrade to the Sackett Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant.

A public scoping session was scheduled for March 19, 2026, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall to gather input on the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement. The upgrade is part of a larger effort to improve water quality and expand treatment capacity.

“We want to do it in a way that doesn’t hit the taxpayers hard. The residents have the right to clean water, but we also have to be responsible with how we get there,” said Supervisor Scott Mace.

A 28-lot residential development near Swinging Bridge Reservoir was also discussed. Project engineer Glenn Smith of Glenn L. Smith Consulting Engineer, outlined testing results and infrastructure plans, noting that all roads would be privately maintained by a homeowners’ association. Mace added, “As long as those roads remain private and up to the HOA to maintain, we’re fine with that. But that has to be clearly noted in the final plans,” said Mace.

The board also approved $15,000 for preliminary engineering and conceptual design work for the Route 42 Water District. Mace said the intent was to start building cost estimates that could be shared with the public.

The board also renewed its agreement with the YMCA for the 2026 Summer Youth Day Camp at East Mongaup River Park. The camp will operate from July 1 through August 30, and the town agreed to contribute up to $9,000 toward operational costs.
