MONTICELLO — The Village of Monticello Police Department received a 911 call around 3:40 p.m. on Friday afternoon concerning a multiple vehicle accident on Route 42 near the Sleepy Hollow Apartment complex.

The Monticello Volunteer Fire Department and Village Police arrived to find debris littered across two lanes of traffic from three vehicles that had collided.

According to police, a 43-year-old woman from Hurleyville was headed north on Route 42 toward the Village of Monticello when she fell asleep behind the wheel. She drifted over the center line before striking two other vehicles headed south toward White Lake.

A 30-year-old female from Queens who was in a Hyundai Odyssey that was struck was transported by Hatzolah to Catskill Regional Medical Center citing neck pain. MobileMedic was also on the scene.

Traffic was backed up on both sides of 42 for over an hour. “When you have a car accident on a Friday afternoon during the summertime - especially in that area - traffic gets congested pretty quick,” said Village of Monticello Police Lt. Mark Johnstone. “It was a pretty big hit, thankfully no one was seriously injured.”

No serious injuries occurred and authorities say there's no evidence that the driver who fell asleep was under any influence.
