LIBERTY – On May 7, New York State Police (NYSP) in Liberty initiated a traffic stop on a car traveling westbound on State Route 17 near Exit 98 in the Town of Liberty committing several violations, according to NYSP.

During the stop, police dog K9 Kell conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 89 illegal firearms of various makes, models, and calibers, 18 of which were reported stolen. Multiple extended magazines, large-capacity ammunition feeding devices, and various quantities of ammunition were also recovered.

The driver was identified as Malik Bromfield, age 22, of Ontario, Canada, along with two passengers identified as Faizan Ali, age 25, of Ontario, Canada, and Kamal Salman, age 22, of Boynton Beach, Florida.

Bromfield, Ali, and Salman were subsequently placed under arrest and transported to State Police Middletown for processing. All three defendants were ultimately turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, announced that the defendants were attempting to smuggle those firearms to Canada and are each charged with multiple counts, including smuggling from the United States, unlicensed dealing in firearms, transporting stolen firearms in interstate commerce, and unlawful possession of firearms.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, during the traffic stop with NYSP Ali consented to a roadside search of his person, during which a trooper recovered an expired Pakistani National Driving Permit issued to an Afghan national in another name concealed in Ali’s buttocks.
