UDC to host Nov. 7 talk on proposed Lackawaxen River National Designation

Posted

NARROWSBURG – The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) will host a public presentation on “Seeking National Wild and Scenic River Designation for the Lackawaxen River” on Thursday, November 7, at 7 p.m. at the Upper Delaware Council office, 211 Bridge St., Narrowsburg, NY and virtually by Zoom.

Christine Foland, representing the Lackawaxen River Conservancy, will speak about that organization’s proposal to submit the Lackawaxen River for a study by the National Park Service into whether it qualifies to become a Partnership Wild and Scenic River.

The first step requires documenting local support to the region’s Pennsylvania representatives to the U.S. Congress and Senate to authorize the study.

To be eligible, the study must confirm the free-flowing nature of the Lackawaxen River from below Prompton Lake to the Delaware River and identify at least one outstandingly remarkable value, such as natural, historical, cultural, or recreational.

Approval into this program that protects and brings national recognition to rivers that flow through non-federal lands also requires drafting a river management plan and establishing a local council to administer it in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS).

Ultimately, NPS determines eligibility and an Act of Congress authorizes the designation.

The Lackawaxen River Conservancy is actively seeking letters of support for this effort. Attend the UDC Nov. 7th presentation or visit www.lackawaxenriver.org/wild-scenic-river/ for more information.

The UDC’s monthly business meeting to immediately follow the virtual presentation.

All UDC meetings are open to the public.

To request the Zoom link to participate remotely, contact UDC Administrative Support Stephanie Driscoll at (845) 252-3022 or stephanie@upperdelawarecouncil.org.

Please check www.upperdelawarecouncil.org or UDC social media pages for any meeting updates.
