As communities across New York prepare to head to the polls this coming Tuesday for school board and budget elections, it is worth remembering that these local votes may be among the most important decisions residents make all year.
In national politics, or even the state and local level, citizens don’t have a direct say in the budget. We elect representatives who we think will make the best choices thus keeping our Republic strong.
But with school district elections, we have the opportunity to vote on the budget directly, and it’s important to be informed. A simple “yes” or “no” vote can decide the fate of a school district.
School budgets can be difficult to balance, especially as districts face rising costs for transportation, utilities, health insurance and personnel. They are not simply about numbers on a spreadsheet. They are about values. They reflect what a community believes its children deserve.
Additionally, voters will be electing members to the school board. These are volunteers who are giving of their time and energy to help shape the future of your school. They may be parents of kids in the school, or they may just be community members or former students. Either way, they have a connection to the school and know that strong schools benefit the entire community.
Whether or not you have kids attending the school, the school budget affects property taxes. While no one wants to see higher taxes, the rising costs we are seeing today undoubtedly have an impact on the school’s budgets.
Residents should take time to review the proposed budgetin their school district, learn about the candidates and consider the long-term needs of their district. Turn to page 1A, 1B, or 9A in today’s edition of the Sullivan County Democrat to learn more.
