Liberty man killed testing ‘gender reveal' device

LIBERTY — The New York State Police in Liberty (NYSP) are investigating an explosion that left one man dead and injured another around noon on Sunday .

NYSP Troop F Public Information Officer, Steve Nevel, said that State Police responded to a residence on the Lt. JG Brender Highway in the Town of Liberty on February 21 at approximately 11:55 a.m. for a report of an explosion.

In a press release issued Monday, the NYSP say Christopher Pekny, 28, was building the device to be used at his child's upcoming gender reveal party. The device exploded resulting in the death of Christopher and injuring his brother Michael Pekny, 27.

Michael Pekny was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown.

Nevel said the device was supposed to propel a pink or blue color for the gender reveal. He said the explosion did not occur at the party itself but was a “trial run.”

Nevel said it was falsely reported by another media outlet that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is involved in the case.

“This [device] was not meant to harm or injure anyone,” Nevel said. “There's no Federal agencies involved [in the investigation] and at no time was the general public in danger.”

This incident remains under investigation by the New York State Police and the New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit.

The Pekny family, who own the Robin Hood Diner in Livingston Manor, released a statement through their social media page saying, “We are deeply saddened and must inform you all of the loss of our dear and beloved Christopher. We appreciate the overwhelming display of love and support that you all have shown. The Robin Hood will be closed for the immediate future. More details will be posted when we have them available.”
