31st Annual Rhulen Rock Hill Run & Ramble sees over 700 participants

ROCK HILL – Over Father’s Day weekend, on Saturday, June 17, over 700 entrants participated in the 31st Annual Rhulen Rock Hill Run & Ramble (R4) 5K. The event saw runners and walkers of all ages, from 4 to 89 years old, as well as 62 virtual participants.

A new addition to the race this year, according to the event’s director Suzy Rhulen Loughlin, was awarding a $500 grant to a firehouse that had five or more members complete the R4 5K. This is in an effort to support health in Sullivan County. The winning firehouse was Lake Huntington Fire Department.

R4 also awarded a trophy to the first firefighter to cross the finish line - which was 19-year-old Owen Bassett of Rock Hill Fire House, who finished in 37th place overall at 22 minutes and six seconds.

The 5K honors Loughlin’s father, Walter Rhulen, who passed away of Leukemia at the age of 65 in 1998. Loughlin also lost her son, Trevor, at 21-years-old which led to the Trevor Loughlin Foundation being born. Loughlin said they raised $90,000 this year and $1.6 million to date. They also had 30 new bone marrow donors, which puts the number since 2014 up to 730 donors.

Chris Biondi, a Class of 2020 graduate of Stony Brook University and 2016 graduate of Pine Bush High School, crossed the finish line at 16 minutes and 28 seconds to take home first place.

Skylar Musa, an assistant track coach at Tri-Valley Central School District, was the first overall female winner as she finished in 18 minutes and six seconds - which was good for sixth place overall.

Volunteers and sponsors help bring this event its success each year, and there was plenty of food and fun for participants and their families in Rock Hill.
