Kampgrounds of America (KOA) reported people prefer outdoor camping adventures and road trips because they are affordable, easy to access, and allow for flexible planning.

Last year, 58 million households camped at least once, spending 52 billion dollars that went to local communities and economies. Since 2014, the number of households who camp three or more times annually has grown by 174%. 

Camping continues to surge in popularity according to the KOA. Toby O’Rourke, president of KOA said, “A decade of independent research confirms that camping is a preferred way for many to travel, try new things and connect with what they care about most.”

The report states that last year, 6.4 million households camped for the first time and 92 million households are considered campers. Those households are also younger, more diverse, and more urban-centric.

The report shows urban dwellers are eager to escape city life, unwind, and make memories with friends and family. 

Many campsites across America range from private facilities to public campgrounds such as state and national parks. The report also said it’s relatively easy to plan a last-minute road trip based on personal needs and time off. It is also easy to pack up the family and pets and go camping. 

In 2022, 15 million households went RVing, with almost 12 million families owning their RVs. The research shows RVers are planning to use their rigs during the economic downturn, and RV travel is anticipated to remain very strong. 

Walking, fishing and hanging out around the campfire with an adult beverage continues to be the highlights of a camping trip. Fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and hiking are the leading recreational activities on trips. 

New York’s state-run camping facilities continue to be popular. In 2021, overnight reservations at campsites operated by the Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Prevention and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation climbed to record highs. 

Campsites, cabins, cottages and yurts at State Park campgrounds were occupied for 787,103 nights surpassing the previous 2019 record of 684,820 nights by 15%. DEC campgrounds were occupied for 394,401 nights surpassing the previous 2016 record of 354,521 nights by more than 10%.
