Catskill-Delaware Publications launches Spanish paper

SULLIVAN COUNTY –– Catskill-Delaware Publications, parent company of the Sullivan County Democrat, is pleased to announce a new newspaper joining the family, Hoy en Sullivan. The first issue is being delivered across Sullivan County beginning last Friday.

The free and first-of-its- kind publication in Sullivan County will be produced monthly. It is completely in Spanish and seeks to connect the growing Latinx population with the latest news, as well as the businesses, institutions and resources that we have in this County.

For over 130 years, Catskill-Delaware Publications has served Sullivan County.

Through everyday observations, later backed by Census data, the company noticed that Sullivan County is changing, with at least 20 percent of residents identifying as Hispanic/Latino.

Some have spent the entirety of their lives in Sullivan County, but for many, they’ve come to this country and community for a better life for themselves and their families.

“We know there is often pressure on immigrants to assimilate and learn English. We recognize that this process doesn’t happen overnight, and quite frankly, don’t feel that anyone should have to wait to be informed about what is happening in their community,” said Catskill-Delaware Publications Managing Editor Joseph Abraham. “In continuing with our goal to serve every member of this community to the best of our ability, we are hoping to connect our Spanish-speaking neighbors to our County through our newest project, Hoy en Sullivan.

Meet the editor

Catskill-Delaware Publications is pleased to introduce Rebeca C. Rivera as editor of Hoy en Sullivan.

Rivera is no stranger to Catskill-Delaware Publications as she has written for the Democrat and the company’s 50-plus special sections in the past.

Rivera has a B.A. in Creative Writing, M.A. in Literature and is working on a doctorate in Literature. She is also an instructor in the English Department at SUNY Orange.

“We are excited to introduce Rebeca C. Rivera as the editor of this publication,” Abraham said. “Her work ethic is second to none, and she shares Catskill-Delaware Publications’ motivation and determination to be the resource this community deserves.”

“This is a much-needed endeavor for Sullivan County, specifically for the county’s Spanish-speaking community members,” Rivera stated. “It has taken many years and lots of support to get this project started and I look forward to sharing it with everyone when it is published.”
