LOCH SHELDRAKE — The Lady Generals came out scorching and clicking on all cylinders as they took on Westchester Community College on December 5. They put up more than 100 points for the second time this season, and a strong defensive effort led to a 71-point win as they finished 120-49. The game was a milestone victory for Head Coach Ben Newberg, who earned his 100th victory.
Coming into the game, the Lady Generals had just lost a close contest after a scoreless fourth quarter gave up an 8-point lead. They made sure not to let that happen on Tuesday night.
Shanay McFarlane led the charge with 20 points, with Shonyae Edmonds adding 18 of her own.
Coach Newberg and the Lady Generals placed emphasis on the defense, and getting out in transition early, leading to several 10-second violations against Westchester in the first half. The turnovers resulted in a plethora of fast break buckets, putting the momentum of the game solely in Sullivan’s hands.
From start to finish, it was SUNY Sullivan’s game to win, and they made sure to do so convincingly.
The team didn’t know the win would be Newberg’s 100th, which made the game “that much more meaningful,” Newberg explained. “I didn’t want to add any extra stress or pressure on the girls tonight. I just wanted them to go out and play our style of ball and they did just that and I’m proud of them.”
With the win, Newberg is the newest coach to reach the 100-win milestone for SUNY Sullivan. His coaching career started at the Borough of Manhattan CC and Medgar Evers College, but it’s safe to say that Coach Ben Newberg has found a home here in Sullivan County.
