George G. Shackley, Sr. of Callicoon, NY passed away at the age of 91, on 7/28/23.

The son of the late Isabelle Pearl Shackley.  George was born in Englewood, NJ in 1932.

Beloved husband of the late Dorothy A. Shackley of 51 years.

Together they raised 6 children and a stepson.

He is survived by his sons George Jr. and his wife Joanne Shackley of Utah, and Tom and his wife Jessica Shackley of PA; a stepson, Willis and his wife Kimberly Kratz of NJ; four daughters of which he was predeceased by his oldest daughter Karen Gingras and his surviving son-in-law Dennis Gingras of NC, Patricia and Vincent Bongiardino of NJ; Linda Noren and Ann and James Edwards all of NY.

He always wanted a large family to be surrounded by, and his wish was granted, with 15 grandchildren AND 11 great-grandchildren who loved him dearly. Along with many nieces and nephews. He was known as “Pop” by many!!!

He was predeceased by a grandson, Vincent Ross Bongiardino and a sister, Winnie and her family.

In his younger years, George worked as an Operating Engineer and made history, the same as his family before him on many Landmarks in New York City and New Jersey. He even helped to construct his own children’s Elementary School in Bergen County in NJ.

If there was a difficult or dangerous job to be done, he was often called upon in his field of expertise. He was awarded for his continuous years of service in the Local 825 Union. He will forever be remembered for his mechanical abilities, he was a Universal Man and had the ability to fix anything which he passed onto his sons!

During that time he resided with his family in NJ.

George was very much a family man and wanted more. He and his family relocated to Callicoon, NY where he made his forever home. George loved nature and was an avid hunter. He was a long-standing member in a Hunting Club for many decades.

He was well-known in the community. George took advantage of every minute of every day, especially in his later years, to live his life to the fullest. He loved to tell stories of his younger years and shared valuable life lessons.

Future arrangements to Celebrate the Life of George “Pop” Shackley will be made within the community.
