Great job, keep it going

his weekend marks “Graduation Weekend” in Sullivan County where all eight school districts will host their graduations starting Friday and concluding on Sunday afternoon.

We would like to be the first to congratulate our newly-minted graduates – a few days early – and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. They say that with age comes wisdom – and while we are not completely sold on that saying – we would like to offer a little advice for our young adults who are now venturing out in the world for the first time.

1. Time flies. Yes, we know, you’re all 18 years old and sometimes days seem to drag on forever. But trust us, when you get a little older you probably will have more to do than time allows and not only days will fly by – but months and years. Enjoy every day to its fullest.

2. Do what you love. While not every task or job can be perfect, it’s important to find your passion and follow it. Today’s world is changing faster than ever before in the history of our universe. Most of you will never know what it means to work for the same employer for 40 years and then retire. You will find new adventures and jobs throughout your career. Most importantly, enjoy what you do for a living – and you will never work another day in your life.

3. Enjoy your friends. This sounds so simple but it is truly important to have a group of friends you can enjoy time with – and cherish. Right now you all are enjoying the best of times – your high school graduations. But there will surely be a lot of challenges and tough days ahead that you will need to reach out to someone to share your problems. This is not a weakness – but the greatest strength we as humans have. And never be afraid to make a new friend.

4. Keep learning. No matter if you are going off to college, entering the military or starting a job straight out of high school, what you know is important. Never be satisfied with just being able “to do the job.” Learn all about the company you work for, learn about the community you live in, find out who your elected representatives are and also where the best pizza parlor is in town. Knowledge is strength and will give you a big advantage in all your dealings.

5. Always remember to say “Please and Thank You.” Sorry for the parental advice, but these two important sayings will truly go a long way in life. You can start this weekend by thanking your parents and family members for the support and hard work they put into your high school graduation. Next grab your teachers and school administrators for a ‘Thank you,’ I really appreciated that moment.

And please remember as you go through life to always respect and appreciate all the good fortune you receive, it will truly be a blessing.

Thank you for reading – and go out and conquer the world! You are our future.
