Sullivan West pounded by Burke in five-inning mercy loss

LAKE HUNTINGTON- Mama said there’d be days like this. But for the Sullivan West Bulldogs, it was a day they’d like to forget. After the teams went scoreless in the first inning, Burke exploded for a 14-run second inning as they batted around giving Bulldog hurler Jacob Hubert a growing sense of frustration.

The inning began with a walk issued to catcher John Cook. As often is the case, an opening base on balls can be a forerunner to a big inning. What followed was just that as the next seven batters reached on hits or walks. The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the bottom of the second by dint of a passed ball and a single by Max Ebert.

In the third the game quieted some as Burke scored a lone run and Sullivan West put up two via an RBI single by Brandon Haass and a passed ball with Adam Ernst at the plate. Burke’s five-run fourth inning put the game out of reach for good.

To add insult to injury they put up a five-spot in the fifth as well while the Westies could answer with only one run in the final two stanzas. Andrew Hubert and Evan Ebert came on in relief with little success. By games end, the Bulldogs had garnered an 0-3 (0-1) record having surrendered 51 runs combined against Port Jervis, Chapel Field and Burke while scoring only 11.

The good news came the following day as Sullivan West downed Ellenville 14-2 for their first win of the season and hopefully a signal that things are going to get better.

The Bulldogs have a trio of non-league games this week at Fallsburg, home against Chester and then on to Cooperstown to face Monticello.
