Hopscotching around the news

Our news pages have been full of interesting facts lately and 2024 is shaping up to be a very interesting year for Sullivan County.

Business news seems to be grabbing a lot of headlines as of late – with the pending sales of several major companies and, sadly, the closure of some very well-established businesses in Monticello and Jeffersonville.

Many new business – and business opportunities – are happening all around the county and Saturday’s opening of Holiday Mtn. Ski Area was welcome news to the hundreds of skiers who hit the slopes as well as new owner Mike Taylor.

After having invested millions of dollars in this new venture, Holiday Mtn. is poised to be Sullivan County’s leading winter attraction as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

And speaking of great events – what about the Eastern States Classic, a huge wrestling tourney which was held over the weekend at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse at SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake.

More than 160 schools sent nearly 700 wrestlers to the event in an incredible windfall for Sullivan County during the early part of January. Nearly every motel room was booked across the county as thousands of parents, wrestlers and fans from eight states descended on Sullivan County. This is the 20th year of the Eastern States Classic and not only is it an incredible sporting event, it is also a true economic engine for our county.

The collaboration between Roscoe Beer Company and Roscoe Mountain Club is a marriage that should prove successful as both brands are not only well known but offer quality service to its customers.

This is a great example of how collaboration can work in Sullivan County, and we look forward to attending great events hosted by this new partnership.
