My backyard birds seem to be coming around more than they were. The gray squirrels too! My husband gave me an article from the “NY Outdoor News” that I am sharing with you since we all have been asking each other about the loss of birds at our feeders. North America has suffered a staggering loss of birds - bird populations went down by 3 billion birds - 25% of the total - in the past 50 years. There now are 40% fewer Baltimore orioles and 25% fewer blue jays and juncos.

How we can help our birds: Put decals on windows near feeders (to break up the reflection) or along a route birds often use, maybe turn your outdoor kitty into an indoor kitty, avoid using harmful pesticides - many products are lethal to birds and the insects they eat and be nature friendly and plant native-to-our region trees, shrubs and plants. I hope all of us “bird lovers” see more songbirds this Spring! By the way, how many more weeks do we have before Spring arrives? Is the groundhog ever right ?

Have a Happy Valentine's Day!
