Kurt Buddenhagen talks Bulldogs move to 'B'

LAKE HUNTINGTON — “Things can change each year. We just have to prepare for that.”

Kurt Buddenhagen’s wise words encapsulated this year’s re-classification. With the addition of Class AAA, some of the fringe schools across the county have moved up or down, depending on new numbers.

For Sullivan West, who was on the upper end of Class C, moving up nearly across the board to B is a challenge that they’ll have to face head on this year.

Despite lower enrollment numbers this year, interest in sports is up around the different Fall sports this season in Sullivan West.

“If numbers continue to rise, we’re hoping to add a JV football team,” Buddenhagen said. “We’ve been very lucky. We have a strong athletics program and coaches that are invested in the future of the programs as well.”

With many of the larger schools, Sullivan West included, already hosting Volleyball teams, Kurt seemed enthusiastic about the other schools in the county gaining interest in hosting programs of their own.

“We’re looking forward to other schools getting their Volleyball programs up and running so we can have a full slate of teams,” he said.

Aside from the move to Class B, not much has changed at Sullivan West.

“No news is good news. Keeps are staying interested in sports and we’re hoping to grow competitive teams. Many kids are trying out and it makes the players and teams more competitive,” Buddenhagen said.
