Winter in Upstate New York transforms our region into a pretty, snowy landscape, but it also brings challenges for drivers. Navigating snowy conditions requires a combination of caution, preparedness, and an understanding of the unique factors that come into play in this part of the county.

One of the first steps to ensure safe winter driving is investing in a set of quality snow tires. These tires are designed to provide better traction on icy and snowy roads, significantly improving your vehicle’s handling in challenging conditions. Upstate NY’s winter roads demand the extra grip that winter tires offer.

Driving in snowy conditions requires a different mindset. Slow down and allow for extra travel time to reach your destination. Reduced visibility and slippery roads make it crucial to maintain a safe and manageable speed. Remember, it’s not a race; it’s about arriving safely.

Maintain a greater following distance than you would in dry conditions. This extra space provides a buffer in case you need to brake suddenly. Sullivan County roads can be unpredictable in winter, so allowing more room between vehicles is a key safety measure.

Our area is known for sudden snow squalls (hello last week!), which can significantly reduce visibility. Stay informed about weather conditions before heading out, and if a squall hits while driving, pull over to a safe location until visibility improves. It’s better to be a little late than risk your safety.

Lastly, respect the power of winter weather! If conditions are severe, stay home if possible.

Don’t forget about Smugglers Nob Annual Youth Ice Fishing Tournament will be held on Sunday, February 4th from 8 AM to 2 PM in memory of Gerald “Jerry” Bruce Sheppard.

Parents bring all of the kids out for a fun-filled day of ice fishing. All kids fish for free. Food and beverages for all kids who participate, food and beverages available for purchase for adults. All children will be eligible for prizes. Fishing regulations will be in accordance with NYSDEC. Fishing access will be located at 175 Mitchell Pond West Road. Transportation will be provided by club members, no outside ATV/UTV’s. Registration will be upon entry.
