Fall is upon us and the changing of the trees are so pretty. Sullivan County is truly a beautiful place to live. Lakeview Pizzeria and Bar would like to thank everyone who came out to their ½ way to St. Paddy's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner on Saturday, September 21. It was a great success and they sold out.

I am just trying to help get the word out there, the star exemption is for your school taxes only, and at your premiere address. All new Basic and Enhanced STAR will be required to register with NYS, if you didn't have the STAR exemption on your property prior to 2015. If you have a Basic on the roll now, and will be eligible for ENHANCED STAR for the next year (you can apply the YEAR in which you turn 65) then you must complete an application and an Income Verification form the first year only. After that the State will verify your income and you will not have to provide a renewal form each year. Anyone who has an ENHANCED STAR exemption that appears on the final roll will not have to renew with me. They will be verified by NYS next year.

As of the 2019-2020 school year, seniors are required to enroll in the state's income verification program in order to receive the Enhanced STAR benefit. Seniors can no longer file with their local assessor; the failure to enroll in the Income Verification Program will result in the senior losing the Enhanced STAR benefit. To accommodate those seniors that did not realize they were required to enroll in the Income Verification Program, the state has authorized late enrollment in the program - that is, by the last day to pay penalty free - so long as good cause for the late enrollment is demonstrated. Consequently, the collecting officer may be directed by the stateto adjust tax bills that have already been mailed out. The state has put forth the following presentation to assist collecting officers that are directed to reduce a tax bill because of a late filing. The presentation can be found at www.tax.ny.gov/star/.
