MONGAUP VALLEY –– L&B Tack closed out a perfect 20-0 season Tuesday night with a 24-14 final to win the Sullivan County Women’s Softball League A Division title over the reigning champion Charlie’s Angels. The two teams battled until the end but timely hitting by L&B throughout the night proved to be the difference maker.

L&B won both games (held at Collins Field in Mongaup Valley) of the best of three championship series decisively, with a 17-7 win in game one on Monday before closing out the Sullivan County Women’s Softball League’s 47th season Tuesday night with another big win.

In the finale on Tuesday, L&B jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a 2-run homerun in the first inning and never took their foot off the gas. The Angels stayed within striking distance for most of the game and rallied from behind throughout the night, but never had a lead.

In the 5th inning the game was close, with L&B only leading by five runs, but the new champions came out in the top of the 6th and scored 10 runs, tripling their lead as the game neared its conclusion. A 3-run home run capped off a 5-run rally for the Angels in the last of the 6th inning, but the 10-run differential would carry through the 7th and into the end of the game.

With the win, L&B put themselves back atop the A Division. Prior to Charlie’s Angels beating them in the championship series in 2019, they had won six straight A Division titles.

L&B dedicated their undefeated 2021 season to Michael Weiner, one of their coaches who passed away between the seasons. The team wore new shirts that included his number, 8, before their own and each shirt had one of his many quotes.

“We are all a big softball family, both on and off the field,” Barb Merton said after the game. “We play well because we’re close and we get along.”
