Molinaro sworn into Congress

WASHINGTON D.C.  — Marcus Molinaro was sworn into office early Saturday morning as the new representative for New York’s 19th Congressional District.

Formerly the Dutchess County Executive, Molinaro won election to the United States House of Representatives last November after defeating challenger Josh Riley.

“I am humbled and honored to take the oath of office today and begin representing New York’s 19th District in Congress,” Molinaro said.  “I have dedicated my adult life to public service. First as a village Mayor, then as a State Assemblyman, and most recently as County Executive. I view my new role in Congress as a continuation of my commitment to public service.”

The swearing in ceremonies for 75 new members of Congress had been delayed as House Republicans debated who would hold the speaker’s gavel.

After four days, Rep. Kevin McCarthy was elected to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives. Rep. Molinaro was among those who supported McCarthy.

“While it took longer than I had hoped to be sworn in, this time has underscored the importance of working within my own party and across the aisle to get things done for the people of this district,” Molinaro continued.

Molinaro had originally run to represent NY-19 against Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan. The special election had been to fill out the remainder of Antonio Delgado’s congressional term after he was appointed New York’s Lieutenant Governor.

Ryan won the special election, but Molinaro defeated Democratic candidate Josh Riley in the new NY-19 created after redistricting.

“Serving at all levels of local government, I have seen firsthand how Washington ignores the issues that matter most to our community,” Molinaro said. “In Congress, I will ensure Upstate New York’s voice is raised and as I have always done, work to deliver real results by bringing those with differing perspectives together.”
