Monticello middle schoolers take on Spartan race

BETHEL – Health education teacher Scott Cooper organized a Spartan Club at Monticello’s RJK Middle School, which culminated on Saturday at Bethel Woods.

Students trained all year as a club for the physically demanding race, while also learning the values and positive characteristics of living as a role model and leader.

The two mile race on Saturday included 15 obstacles and challenges along the course.

Thanks to support from Sullivan 180 and their Empowering a Healthier Generation initiative, exercise and training equipment were purchased to assist the Spartan racers in their journey.

The program is a Sullivan 180 flagship and since the launch in 2021, they have amassed 22 Healthier Generation Advisors representing all Sullivan County public school buildings, Sullivan BOCES and SUNY Sullivan.

In all, there were 38 students that completed the race from RJK and there are 45 students in the club.

The club has met once a week all year to train and develop fitness and character.

“This has been a dream of mine,” Club organizer Scott Cooper said. “To give students the opportunity to come together, work hard, set goals and experience a Spartan Race. It’s transformative and changes lives.”

After Saturday’s race, three teachers and 12 Monticello high schoolers participated in the adult Spartan Race, a three mile course with 20 obstacles.

“Sullivan County is ranked 61 out of 62 counties in New York in regards to health and wellness. These students are making a difference and getting stronger both mentally and physically.”
