JEFFERSONVILLE –– Sullivan West Central School District’s Middle School Archery Club participated in the Catskill Outdoorsman Tournament where they aimed arrows down range in Jeffersonville last Friday.
Archery Head Coach Scott Scardino and Coach Ryan Terracciano had 36 students, all in 5th & 6th grade, all interested in practicing the lifelong sport this season. The club saw guidance from assistant coaches, Sullivan West High Schoolers Brooklyn Veiro and Avery Bair.
Results from the Catskill Outdoorsman Tournament are as follows:
5th Grade Girls
1st Place: Kylie Miller
2nd Place: Mckenna Gosley
3rd Place: Victoria Skuthan
5th Grade Boys
1st Place: Ulisse Carbone
2nd Place: Nathan Diehl
3rd Place: Dylan Darling
6th Grade Girls
1st Place: Ava Steppich
2nd Place: Allison Kelly
3rd Place: Lilyana O’Dell
6th Grade Boys
1st Place: Colton Kautz
2nd Place: Wyatt Erdman
3rd Place: Daniel Bury
“A huge thanks to Brett Erdman Contracting and John Diehl Masonry who generously paid the entry fees for all 36 archers to participate [in the tournament.] Thanks to Anna Steppich with Wingmom Catskills and many other parents who donated funds for pizza from Michelangelo’s, soda and cupcakes from Peck’s Markets. The students were very excited for this tournament and all performed to the best of their ability,” the Head Coach said.
“Congratulations to all the students that received medals. The time and effort the students have put into this sport is commendable. It was encouraging to see the students form get better and scores get higher each week,” Scardino said. “Thank you to the parents for being so supportive this season, and we can’t wait to see what these students do in the future.”
Showing prowess at NASP
The Catskill Outdoorsman Tournament was fresh off the heels of the club’s appearance at the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) Tournament in Syracuse earlier this year.
Because the 23 students who participated were required to have their own bows to compete, Sullivan 180, along with Kayla O’Dell, assisted in providing the funds for the student’s equipment for those without.
“Our middle school team came in seven out of nine in the state,” Scardino said. “The scores were so close that our middle school team was only seven points away from 3rd place. For the sixth grade girls, Ava Steppich came in 5th place out of 57. For the sixth grade boys, Colton Kautz came in 5th place out of 62.”
“The entire team represented Sullivan West with pride and respect both on and off the range. The students were honored to be the first team from Sullivan West to compete in this Tournament.”
