October has universally become recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month for many Americans, not just those personally impacted by the awful disease. There is power in pink — with the ribbons, car bumper stickers, tee-shirts, fundraisers, potlucks, and so much more that demonstrates a massive community of supporters for those battling for their lives in a fight against breast cancer.

We see these pink symbols and are reminded regularly, but it is vital to re-familiarize ourselves with the issues every October, as those who do battle are doing so in the other 11 months of the year. 

Mammogram services and early detection is key when it comes to cancer. Ask your usual medical provider where and when you can get regularly tested.

Of the many services that give endlessly for the betterment of those impacted by the disease is Ride2Survive, who just had their annual Dinner Dance — the theme for the event being “Salute to Our Superheroes.” 

Founded by breast cancer survivors Glorianne Ellison and Kara Passante in 2013, Ride2Survive Sullivan County has gathered through community effort and donated over $332,500 that has been dispersed to more than 1,400 community members. The money helps them with essential services and other travel expenses regarding their cancer treatments. 

We hope that all of these efforts by Ride2Survive and the many other dedicated individuals and organizations throughout the county combined see great success in their attempts to assist those in need to overcome all the roadblocks on their pathway to a healthy life.

Of course, those who we have lost to the disease of cancer are kept always deep within our hearts. It is a disease which has no preference and attacks without prejudice. Because of this, we must all be committed to keeping guard against it for ourselves, our families and our neighbors.
