Town of Neversink residents are a feisty bunch

After over 20 years as Town of Neversink Historian, it’s time for me to turn the page on this part of my life. My parting words include a shout-out to Town of Neversink residents. They come in different ages, shapes and sizes. Their religions and politics may be the same or they may be different but one thing is sure - they pitch in and help when it’s needed and they are a focused group.

In 1878, the first version of today’s Grahamsville or Little World’s Fair was held. Today that fair is still being held. Way over 100 years old and still an awesome event!  Local folks began the fair; local folks kept it going through the years and local folks can be proud of the job they do today.

The Tri-Valley Central School District is a grand example. This area had no high school. Those going to high school in this area went to either Liberty or Ellenville High Schools. A group of concerned citizens banded together; fought the State Education Department; found the funding and thus Tri-Valley had its own school.

A really current example is the Time and the Valleys Museum and the Lost Farm. This couldn’t have been done without an amazing group of people and the willing partnership of the Daniel Pierce Library which was expanding and modernizing.  No local tax money went into the Museum creation and development. Some grants, some wonderful donations by local businesses and a whole lot of individual ingenuity, creativity and good old hard work by local people!

Whether it’s an ice rink, a new playground or a volunteer firemen’s group, there are always local folks ready and willing to partner and get things done. No wonder, I leave the historian’s position full of awe and admiration for Town of Neversink residents.

It’s with pride that I welcome Mr. Roger Edwards as the new Town of Neversink Historian.
