Unity celebrated in Liberty

LIBERTY – Booths by community organizations, resources and fun activities lined part of Walnut Mountain Park in Liberty on Saturday, as part of the Second Annual Liberty Unity Festival, hosted by Sullivan Allies Leading Together (SALT).

Organizations/agencies also in attendance included Action Toward Independence, Fearless! Hudson Valley, Pets Alive (who gave out free pet food), Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster, the Village of Liberty Police Department and more.

District 6 Legislator Luis Alvarez, whose area of representation includes Liberty, had high praise for the event.

“One of the things I like about the event is the amount of people that come to it and it doesn’t matter if you’re Hispanic, Black, White, whatever it is, everybody’s here,” said Alvarez. “It’s amazing to see the people of Liberty and the people of Sullivan County.”

SALT’s Marty Colavito, who also serves as Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County’s Community Cupboard Program Coordinator, described the event as a “celebration of everybody.”

“Leave politics at the door, leave hatred somewhere else, and just come and enjoy yourself,” said Colavito in describing the concept of the festival. “It’s about unity. If we stay together, together we are better.”
