Women’s Soccer League set to start second season

LIBERTY — After a successful first season last summer, the Town of Liberty Women’s Soccer League is looking to expand in 2024. With the season rapidly approaching, registration for this summer is already open.

Last year, nine teams competed in the division, and the Sullivan Strikers won the inaugural season championship.

The Sunday evening league is slated to begin on May 18 and run weekly until August 11. Once the regular season ends, playoffs will follow on August 17 and 18. Games are played at Walnut Mountain in Liberty.

The registration window for the 2024 season closes on April 24, and the cost per team for the season is $600.

For potential players interested in the league, there are a few requirements. For example, you need to be at least 17 years old and graduating from high school to register for a team. The teams are required to have a minimum of eight players, but team sizes of 20 or more are recommended.

Paige Russell, the league’s organizer, is very excited for the upcoming season. “Honestly, I love the competitive edge everyone has. As we constantly dive into work and life, it’s so nice to just have a space where you can be carefree for an hour and play the sport you love.”

The Women’s soccer league joins the growing adult recreational activities in the area that include the Women’s Softball League, co-ed softball leagues and other sports for people to choose from during the summer months.

Another player in the league, Julie Kaufman said, “I didn’t realize how much I missed team sports and female camaraderie until I was back in it, playing with some teammates I haven’t played with in over 15 years. Not only was it great to reconnect, but I had the chance to make so many new friends while doing something I forgot how much I loved. Being a mom with two young kids, it was great to put myself, get some ‘me’ time with girlfriends, and they got to see their mom play soccer. That translated to how much more excited they were to play in their own soccer league. I’m really looking forward to playing again this season.”

The social aspect of getting out and competing with your friends has been a huge draw for many.

“I met so many new people and re-established so many old friendships that I didn’t even realize what I was missing out on,” Allison Pabon said. “I loved seeing the husbands on the sidelines and the kids running around and cheering on their mommas. My best experience has been months after the games, running into teammates in ShopRite or out at local restaurants and feeling an instant bond. Those are my girls. Those are my teammates. It’s a wonderful thing to share.”

If you’re considering joining but are still on the fence, Pabon says, “Set your fears aside and let yourself only think about the game.”

Russell says, “If you’re looking for a way to meet new people and enjoy other women’s company, this is the place for you!”
