Bulldogs and Comets face off in 8-man semifinal

SULLIVAN COUNTY — The Fall season is nearing its conclusion, with football and cross country being the only remaining sports in Sullivan County.

Many of the football teams will be competing in non-league crossovers to get some more game experience before the end of the season.

Sullivan West and Fallsburg are still alive in the 8-man playoffs, but the two squads are facing each other tonight and only one will advance to the Championship game.

That said, let’s take a look at this weekend’s crossover games.

Thursday Night Football

Liberty hosted O’Neill last Sunday, a game in which the RedHawks lost 36-0. Last night they were on the road as they played Dover, a former 8-man team.

Dover has struggled since making the jump back to 11-man football, losing all nine of their contests and being outscored 52-344 ahead of their game vs Liberty.

The details of the game weren’t available at presstime.

Friday Night Lights

Fallsburg at Sullivan West, 7 p.m.

The Comets are headed to Lake Huntington tonight after a 38-32 victory over Tri-Valley in the quarterfinal game. Fallsburg’s offense was clicking on all cylinders as they put up 38 points, including a late drive with less than a minute in regulation to take the lead and win the game.

Sullivan West defeated Fallsburg in their first matchup, and the Bulldogs had an extra week to rest as they awaited the winner of the quarterfinal game to see who they would be facing.

Sullivan West won the first matchup 32-16 after a strong second half propelled by Rally Cruz and his 200 rushing yard game.

Sullivan West will look to get the run game going early, while Fallsburg will have to be strong up front if they want to slow down the Bulldogs.

In their most recent game, Sullivan West lost to Pawling in a battle for the No. 1 seed, but otherwise posted an undefeated division record.

Sullivan West hasn’t lost to a division opponent since 2021, and they will look to keep that streak going tonight.

Saturday Showcase

Monticello at Burke, 1 p.m.

Monticello will be headed to Burke tomorrow to take on the 8-1 powerhouse. Burke is averaging 22.4 points per game and has outscored opponents 202-71 this season.

The Panthers will have their work cut out for them as they have an inverse record at 1-8, allowing 295 points to opponents and scoring just 73.

Onteora at Tri-Valley, 2 p.m.

The Bears played one of the best games of the season last week as they took on the Comets in the 8-man quarterfinal game.

Trailing 24-12 at the half, the Bears stormed back to tie the game at 32 in the second half before ultimately coming up short in the 38-32 loss.

This week, they will host Onteora, the other team that lost in the quarterfinals.

Onteora’s offense has been stellar, averaging 28 points per game, and they had a similarly close quarterfinal loss, losing to Pine Plains 24-22.

The Bears will look to build off of last week’s game as they get closer to the end of the season.
