MONTICELLO – Charlie’s Angels delivered a dominant performance from start to finish, shutting out We Care en route to a 15-0 mercy-rule victory in Women’s League action last week.
Charlie’s Angels set the tone immediately with a strong defensive showing at the top of the first inning, recording three quick outs to keep We Care off the scoreboard. The offense wasted no time backing up that effort. In the bottom of the first, Charlie’s Angels erupted with a string of timely hits that produced seven runs before the inning finally came to an end. We Care managed to stop further damage when a close play at first base narrowly beat the runner after a single, but the Angels had already built a commanding 7-0 lead.
The defensive clinic continued in the second inning. Three consecutive infield ground balls were cleanly fielded and thrown to first base for outs, giving We Care little opportunity to generate offense. Charlie’s Angels added to their advantage in the bottom half. After the first batter was retired at first base, several deep doubles sparked another rally, bringing multiple runners home before We Care recorded the final two outs of the inning. By the end of the frame, the Angels had extended their lead to 12-0.
We Care showed signs of life in the third. A pop fly was caught for the first out, and an infield grounder was converted into the second. A single finally put a runner aboard, but the Angels quickly erased the threat by throwing the runner out at second base on the following play.
In the bottom of the third, Charlie’s Angels added another run. After the first batter was retired and a second runner was thrown out following a strong defensive play by We Care’s shortstop, the Angels responded with a deep triple that brought a runner across the plate. Another towering drive appeared destined for extra bases but was tracked down by the outfield for the final out, leaving the score at 13-0.
We Care’s best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning. Several deep hits put runners on first and second, creating momentum and hopes of breaking up the shutout. A spectacular diving catch in the outfield halted the rally, and although only one out had been recorded at that point, Charlie’s Angels regrouped to retire the next two batters and escape the inning unscathed. The Angels tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch the lead to 15-0.
Any chance of a comeback was quickly extinguished in the fifth as Charlie’s Angels recorded three more outs in short order. When the Angels came to bat in the bottom of the inning, the mercy rule was invoked, ending the contest and sealing a decisive 15-0 victory.
Strong defense, timely hitting, and consistent execution in all phases of the game propelled Charlie’s Angels to a convincing win on a picture-perfect summer evening.
