MONGAUP VALLEY –– It was almost too hot to play in an early Tuesday evening game at Collins Field. A combination of oppressive heat and humidity made it difficult for spectators to enjoy the game, but posed more of a challenge for the players. Danny’s Auto and Charlie’s Angels toughed it out and played a highly entertaining game, which saw Danny’s Auto get the win over the ‘Angels 29 to 20.
Both teams utilized smart baserunning to generate offense; whenever any fielder wasn’t paying attention, runners took advantage of the play, advancing to the next bag before the ball made it back to the mound.
Danny’s defense did well to minimize those plays and played solidly in the field throughout. Caroline Martins assisted her team’s fielding, on several plays including a gem in the third inning. Danny’s offense was superb, scoring 29 runs on 34 hits. Danny’s Mareena Van Etten had a Grand Slam and drove in 6 runs. Haley Carpenter also had a great game for Danny’s, hitting two triples with 4 RBIs.
Charlie’s Angels fought hard from start to finish, scoring a total of 20 runs. They were led by Lacy Van Leuven who had 5 RBIs and by Rachel Countryman who drove in 4 runs. In the end the Angels came up short against a talented Danny’s team, getting hot just in time for the playoffs.
