Cabin fever has us all in its clutches as we hunker down for the last gasps of winter. As I write this spring is only nine days away and the snow is swirling mightily around my house. We all know the old saw prognostication about March- in like a lion and out like a lamb- well that right up there on the veracity scale with the whole groundhog myth if you ask me. When spring arrives is purely subjective. Is it the day the peepers start peeping, a robin arrives on your lawn or you have daffodils popping up? Whatever the signs we certainly are not there yet. Being all cooped up I have probably bought hundreds of seeds of foods and fruits I want to grow. Since I just moved into this house several months ago-forget any thoughts of spring cleaning as I am still trying to locate things I can’t find since the move-my very nice hairdryer and my emersion blender are still on the missing list.

So, when not over ordering seeds I have been binge watching programs on Netflix which can get tiresome. Another free entertainment resource that other fellow hunker-downers may not know about is Kanopy. It is a streaming service that has thousands of well-known and critically acclaimed movies, the old classic movies, independent films, documentaries, award winning foreign films and educational and instructional videos from well-known production companies such as HBO and Paramount -all of which can be streamed on all your devices for free anytime and anywhere. Kanopy also has a specially curated collection-Kanopy Kids which can access a huge collection of movies and educational TV shows for the kiddos to enjoy. All you need to access Kanopy for free is a public library card.

This is just one of the many digital resources that can be accessed remotely from your public library. And Kanopy is a real jewel for those of us who try and watch the growing amount of hardly used digital subscriptions we may be paying for each month. There are two ways to sign up either by going to your local library’s website (sunshinehallfreelibrary.org) and follow the Kanopy link or by going directly to Kanopy.com and putting in your library card number and setting up a pin. Give Kanopy a try and save some money.

Even though it is snowing outside, it’s a great time to jump start your summer job search especially for students. I saw a huge ad for a multitude of different seasonal jobs available at Lake Superior Park in Bethel. I can’t imagine a more beautiful environment to work in, with over 1,400 pristine natural acres. The Park also features Lake Superior and Chestnut Ridge Pond. The Park is not fully managed by the State of New York but rather Sullivan County Parks, Recreation and Beautification Department. The County only runs two areas of the park’s seasonal operations, the lake’s beaches and the picnic areas.

The County is looking for lifeguards, entry attendants and seasonal workers. Lake Superior is a favorite summer recreation spot and is actually open for hunting, fishing, and hiking all year long. A day pass is only $5.00 during the summer and with a valid ID veterans are free. If you are interested in applying and getting salary information you can go to https://sullivan-portal.mycivilservice.com/jobopps or call 845-807-0287. Just a reminder- since we moved our clocks ahead last weekend, it might be a good time to check all of our smoke and carbon detectors as well.
