Lady Generals defend the bunker in season opener

LOCH SHELDRAKE — The energy was through the roof in Loch Sheldrake this past weekend for the Sullivan Tip-Off Classic, and the Lady Generals were a huge part of that.

With their tenacious defense in the full court and relentless attacks at the basket the SUNY Sullivan Women’s team was in full control on  Saturday afternoon. Led by Coach Ben Newberg, the ladies started their season off 1-0 with a win against Montgomery College 79-68. The Lady Generals were led by Shonyae Edmonds who tallied 20 points, four rebounds, four steals and 3 assists in Saturday’s win.

Sullivan came out on fire getting ahead to a 14-2 lead behind their full court press, which had ball handlers committing turnover after turnover leading to basket after basket for Sullivan. The defensive intensity and downhill attacks continued as the game progressed and showed that this year’s Lady Generals team is a team to watch out for.

The ladies showed that they are capable of playing an inside out game around the big plays or a fast tempo isolation-based game, and they seem to have fun no matter the style of play.

Following the win, Coach Ben Newberg stated, “We can get up and go. The fact we have the talent to do so shows potential to be very good.”

The women’s team followed up their season-opening victory on Saturday with a close contest against Howard on Sunday afternoon. The two teams went back and forth all afternoon, but the Dragons’ 20-point 4th quarter effort led to a 62-56 victory over SUNY Sullivan as the Lady Generals fell to 1-1.
