WARWICK -- Nine cross country runners from Sullivan County schools made it to the State Championships as they raced in the Sectional Championship on Saturday at Sanfordville Elementary School. Six of those nine runners were from Tri-Valley, who saw brother and sister duo Anna and Van Furman win their respective 5K race in Class D. Anna, a freshman, finished in 19:00.2, which was well ahead of the pack with the second place runner crossing the finish line over 40 seconds later. Van, a junior,  was also pretty far ahead of the rest of the pack, finishing in 15:44.4 and over 30 seconds before the second place runner. 

“Oh man, it’s awesome to see them both do well,” reigning Class D State Champion Adam Furman said about his younger siblings.  

Also making it to States for the Tri-Valley boys were seniors Craig Costa (4th place) and Noah Edwards (10th place), while senior Amelia Mickelson (5th place) and sophomore Em Richardson (8th place) made it for the girls. Despite the strong showing for Tri-Valley runners, it was Mount Academy who made it to States as a team for the girls and Pine Plains for the boys. 

“We would have hoped to get a team to States, we have a really good team,” Girls Coach Tyler Eckhoff said. “Mount Academy has some strong girls and we’ll be rooting for them to do well at the State meet. Hopefully next year, we’re going as a team.”

“We’ve got a lot of young potential,” Coach Skylar Musa said. “We’ve got a growing team, so we’re hoping next year that we’ve got a lot more girls coming out.”

Eckhoff also said that they were impressed with how the girls ran on Saturday, putting themselves in a position to win as a team. But getting the three girls that they did to States is something they are very proud of. 

“We expect a State Champion [with Anna Furman],” Musa said. “Then with Amelia, probably top 15 to 20. They’re going to be pretty well tapered for the State meet, so they should be fresh. I think they spent a lot of time on mental preparation and not letting pre-race nerves get to them. I think [for] Em probably top 40 or top 50 would be a great goal.”

For the boys, Van was the runner-up at States last year behind his older brother Adam, who is now running at Army West Point. Coach Chip Furman said that his son is definitely coming in as the favorite for the State Class D Championship. 

“We’re just going to try and keep him healthy and keep training through,” Coach Furman said. “Hopefully go for that State title. Craig, we are trying to get into the top 10 and for Noah, probably top 30 for him.”

It is Edwards’ first State Championship as he’ll get some experience there as he makes it there as a senior. 

In the Class C Boys 5K race, junior Isaiah Hershewsky of Fallsburg finished in sixth place at 17:18.70 to get to States. 

“I’m just glad that whatever I put my mind to, it worked out,” Hershewsky said. “I just wanted to make [everybody] proud. I wanted them to have something to look at me and be proud of.”

Hershewsky said that his goal is to just keep getting better each time out and going farther. Now, he has the chance to compete at States for the first time in his high school career. 

For Class B, Monticello had a girl and boy representative making it to States. Junior Eduardo Salinas finished in fourth place for the boys at 16:37.2 and junior Diya Patel finished in 10th place for the girls at 20:50.5. 

NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships take place on Saturday, November 11 at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School in Verona.
