JEFFERSONVILLE – On a beautiful sunny Wednesday afternoon with a sectional championship on the line, the Sullivan West Bulldogs and the Chester Hambletonians delivered a thrilling defensive duel that came down to the final inning. Despite a late rally from the Bulldogs, Chester escaped with a hard-fought 2-1 victory to advance to the championship round against Spackenkill.
The game opened with both teams threatening early. Chester put a runner on second in the top of the first inning, but Sullivan West’s defense stood strong to keep the game scoreless. Chester responded with a quick defensive inning of its own, retiring the Bulldogs in order. The visitors continued to apply pressure in the second, placing multiple runners on base and advancing one all the way to third, but Sullivan West once again came up with timely defensive plays to escape the jam.
The Bulldogs had one of their best opportunities in the bottom of the second inning. A series of solid hits put runners in scoring position and advanced a Bulldog all the way to third base, but Chester’s defense answered the challenge and kept the game scoreless. In the top of the third, Chester strung together several big hits and finally broke through late in the inning with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Energized by the run, Chester’s defense returned to the field and quickly retired the Bulldogs to maintain momentum.
Sullivan West looked for a spark in the middle innings. After holding Chester to just one baserunner in the fourth and preventing the Hambletonians from extending their lead, the Bulldogs managed a couple of hits in the bottom half of the inning but could not advance beyond second base. Chester threatened again in the fifth with multiple hard-hit balls, yet Sullivan West refused to break and kept the deficit at one run. The Bulldogs, however, were unable to answer offensively and went down in order in the bottom of the frame.
The Bulldogs’ defense continued to give their offense a chance in the sixth inning, preventing Chester from advancing beyond second base. Then came the moment Sullivan West had been waiting for. In the bottom of the sixth, Kearstin Knapp drove in Kaitlyn Drobysh off a triple to tie the game at 1-1, sending the Bulldogs into celebration. But Chester escaped without further damage, setting up a dramatic final inning.
In the top of the seventh, Chester answered the challenge. The Hambletonians delivered a key run early in the inning to retake the lead at 2-1 and later put another runner on third before Sullivan West tightened up defensively to prevent additional damage. Facing their final three outs of the season, the Bulldogs battled until the very end. Multiple hits put runners on first and second and brought the tying run within striking distance, but Chester recorded the final outs to secure the sectional championship victory.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Sullivan West capped off another remarkable season. While the Bulldogs fell just short of a sectional title, their 16-4 season and back-to-back division championships cemented another successful chapter for the program. Following the game, Bulldogs Head Coach Anthony Durkin praised his team’s effort and accomplishments.
“Chester played very well,” Durkin said. “My pitcher pitched very well; we just started hitting too late. We got ourselves out of some early trouble, but needed more hits early on. It’s a great group of kids, and we’ve had a great two years. We went 16-4, and we won the division twice now, so it’s been an amazing time.”
