Lady Bulldogs guard their home court with vicious offensive barrage

LAKE HUNTINGTON — Greek mythology tells the tale of Cerberus, the multi-headed dog that guards the gates of the Underworld. Focus on one, and another will strike before you have the chance to defend yourself.

This year’s Lady Bulldogs squad epitomises that tale on the court, with a variety of dangerous shooters that can strike from anywhere on the floor, and their offensive prowess was on full display Thursday night in a 75-25 non-league victory over Liberty.

The Bulldogs opened the game with an onslaught of offense which included six first quarter threes and additional six 2-point shots and a converted free throw to put up an insurmountable 31 points.

Abby Parucki (12) and Nicole Reeves (11) netted three shots from beyond the arc apiece in the first quarter, while Ella Herbert scored seven of her team-high 15 in the frame.

Liberty’s four points in the first quarter were scored by Julissa Velez, who finished with a game-high 17 points.

“We came out in the first quarter and couldn’t miss,” Sullivan West Coach Pat Donovan said after the game.

Sullivan West’s offense slowed up a bit in the second quarter, but Liz Reeves made her presence known as she netted two 3-pointers as the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 44-13 by halftime.

Due to Liberty not having a Jv team this year, Sullivan West was able to bring up a group of girls to fill out their bench, earning valuable minutes of varsity experience in the second half.

“It’s nice that we were able to get a lot of kids in tonight,” Donovan said.

In the second half, Liberty continued to battle despite the lopsided score, but Sullivan West was able to hold on for the victory.

“We played a really good Sullivan West team tonight,” Liberty Coach Tim Johnson said. “They were everything we were expecting and more.”

Coach Johnson continued, “I knew this season would have some ups and downs. We’re a young team but I’m seeing glimpses of improvement from the girls. Julissa Velez is a freshman and has really stepped up this year.”

Coach Pat Donovan added, “Liberty is growing, they’re tough. They are young but have a lot of potential.”

Liberty hosted Beacon on Friday night, and Sullivan West’s next game will be Friday as they participate in the Audra Sipple Spath Scholarship Girls Basketball Tournament in Livingston Manor.
