(Trying to) keep the lights on

Posted

These past few weeks seem to have proved a challenge for our electric grid. Power outages have become increasingly common. Combined with less than decent weather patterns, thousands of residents have been left without a light and other necessary functions, like heat.

This week has reached a new height in power loss it seems. According to NYSEG, a major cause for the loss of light is due to downed power wires thanks to strong winds that have blown their way across the county recently. Being at the mercy of Mother Nature is something that is not new for locals, and we’ve proved to possess the ability to adapt even in the darkest of times, but losing power so frequently has tested the patience of an entire county.

Even government business has been interrupted. The Sullivan County Department of Motor Vehicles reported to lost power, throwing a block in the important processes that go on there.

Of course when the lights go out, there are so many people who begin the work to restore things to normal – especially all the diligent workers at NYSEG who have been replacing downed wires and poles. Without your help, we would all still be in the dark waiting on a miracle. The elements haven’t been inviting either, with high water levels and even snow making an appearance this week. So, thank you for your push to keep the power on as normal.

Additionally, thank you to the towns and villages who have offered places of shelter and heating centers to anyone who has been interrupted and inconvenienced by the recent blackouts. It is comforting to know that there are familiar places to go when you need them.

Hopefully as springtime continues on, the work being put in by so many will bring a new light in the promise that a flipped lightswitch will illuminate our homes, heat our businesses and electrify our favorite places to spend our time.
