Wanda Kupiec of Liberty, NY, a longtime area resident died peacefully Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at the Roscoe Regional Rehab and Residential Health Care Facility in Roscoe, NY.  She was 93.

The daughter of the late Felix and Victoria Cyprian Sommerfeld, she was born June 25, 1929 in Bully-les-Mines, France.  In May, 1954 Wanda, her husband Jean and their two young daughters arrived in New York on the Ile de France Ocean liner and settled in Sullivan County.  All four became naturalized  citizens six years later.  Wanda spoke French, Polish and English fluently and was very proud of her French heritage.

Wanda was a Communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Liberty, NY. She enjoyed knitting, traveling and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Genevieve Dainack of Hurleyville, NY and Christiane Emery and her husband Kenneth of Liberty, NY; one sister, Therese Kaczmarek of France; three grandchildren, Travis Emery and his life partner, Laura, Dr. Zack Emery and his wife Cori, and Dustin Dainack and his wife Alyssa; five great-grandchildren, Joanna Emery, Jack Dainack, Luke Dainack, Jude Dainack and Isla Dainack; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jean Kupiec and a grandson, Dylan Dainack. The family would like to thank everyone at Roscoe Rehab and Nursing for their compassion, kindness and skilled nursing care during the past year that our mother and grandmother was a resident there.

Visitation will be Monday, June 19, from 4-7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 20, at 11 AM in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 264 North Main Street, Liberty, NY.  Father Edward Bader will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cold Spring Road, Liberty, NY.
