Three cheers

It’s that time again where we take a few moments, or in this case, paragraphs, to recognize a few individuals, groups and/or organizations for their efforts.

You might have seen last Friday’s front-page story about how over 300 animals were rescued from a farm in Bethel.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office deputies worked with Catskill Animal Rescue (C.A.R.E.), the Town of Bethel Dog Control Officer, Bethel Constables, White Lake and Kauneonga Lake fire companies and more to remove sheep, goats, dogs, cats, donkeys, birds and other fowl from conditions that C.A.R.E. Director Joanne Gerow described as “horrific.”

Some of the examples she gave of the conditions included many deceased ducks at the scene, animals sitting in their own urine (in some places nearly an inch or two deep), animals in confined places filled with squalor, and without food or drinkable water available.

We are certainly glad that many of the animals will go on to live another day, and are sad to hear of the ones who didn’t make it.

All in all, the collective rescue effort was an impressive feat and yet another example of teamwork in our community.

Event organizers

July was a busy month, with many amazing events having taken place. For example, on the weekend before last, there was Pride in Hurleyville, the Callicoon Country Fair, Battle of Minisink, Riverfest in Narrowsburg and the Delaware Youth Center River Run, to name a few.

A big shoutout to all the organizers who put in tireless amounts of work to make these lovely events happen. They are a great place to make wonderful memories, as well as support local businesses and causes.

Locals and tourists alike certainly had some difficult choices to make since you can’t be two places at once.

WJFF Radio Catskill

Sullivan County’s only public radio station has moved. WJFF Radio Catskill, after spending over three decades in Jeffersonville, has settled into its new space in Liberty, celebrating with a ribbon cutting that was held last week.

The studio looks great and the new technology/equipment is impressive.

We congratulate our media partners on a successful move, which has been a seamless transition, and look forward to tuning in for another three decades and beyond!
